New Book "Blue Cows & Happy Fruit" Celebrates Art-by-Kids
SAN DIEGO, CA To celebrate outstanding artwork-by-kids, California artist and art teacher, Michelle Abrams and her designer husband, Glenn, have recently coauthored a new book, Blue Cows & Happy Fruit: Discovering the Artist in Your Child.
It's an inspirational new how-to/picture book showcasing kids' artwork from their delightful Kids-Did-It! Designs® art collection, and includes a visual art vocabulary, plus hands-on art and design exercises for beginning artists, the same exercises used as the basis for much of the outstanding artwork featured in their collection.
With a delightful attitude and distinctive colorful palette, the book features more than 124 inspirational images created by 74 of Michelle's young art students, ages 3 to 14. For more than 16 summers young children joined Michelle in her San Diego studio to study basic principles of art and design. Her encouragement and contagious love for the arts helped to bring out their best. She often compared their artwork to those of the classics, describing it as, " ...colorful and strikingly beautiful - some worthy of being called fine art in the tradition of Matisse, Picasso or Miro."
Michelle says, "Throughout the many years I've been teaching art, I've discovered that young children, for a few fleeting years, have a delightfully innocent vision of the world. If we take the time to teach them basic visual art concepts and enthusiastically encourage and celebrate their efforts, we can easily discover their natural creativity. Their open minds and unfettered imaginations, still unhindered by reality, will see nothing unusual, for example, about a blue cow, or happy fruit! During this precious time in their lives the artistic possibilities are infinite!"
"Using this inspirational book as a guide, parents, teachers and kids can explore basic art and design concepts and together discover the natural imagination and creativity in all of us. I encourage parents and students to take their artwork off the refrigerator, enlarge it, frame it and hang it on the wall. Treat it as fine art - that's what we do!"
In 1996, Michelle's husband, Glenn, was first inspired to create Kids-Did-It! Properties, the art-licensing and design studio that collects, represents and publishes the student artwork. Aside from the thrill and satisfaction of being published artists, the young kids also earn royalties for the reproduction of their artwork. "We even write royalty payments on our own Kids-Did-It! illustrated checks!" says Glenn. "Students often use the proceeds as extra allowance, for college savings or other causes important to them. Some students have even framed their first royalty check."
About their new Kids-Did-It! Designs® book, Blue Cows & Happy Fruit, Glenn says, "Not only is it a great educational tool for parents and teachers or any beginning artist who wants to learn art basics, it's a great introduction to wonderful artwork that's truly delightful and very inspiring!"
In addition to this new book, illustrations from the Kids-Did-It! Designs® art collection have been featured on merchandise produced by an expanding list of enthusiastic Licensees, including greeting card and gift bag publisher Leap Year Publishing, international postage stamp manufacturer Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation, office product giant MeadWestvaco, Deluxe subsidiary Checks Unlimited, Gibson/American Greetings, calendar manufacturer Norwood Promotions, decorative gift bag manufacturer Jeanmarie® Creations for Walgreens drugstores, Papel Giftware, Prentice Hall and Houghton-Mifflin Publishers and DayGlo® Color Corporation.
Kids-Did-It! has also provided images for The Covenant House for homeless children, as well as Audubon, KPBS-TV, and to local schools and the San Diego Hospice, as part of their fund raising art exhibitions.
Licensed artwork by more than 126 Kids-Did-It! artists has been published under their Kids-Did-It! Designs® retail logo on a variety of merchandise including postage stamps, books, checks and address labels, stationery, note and greeting cards, containers, gift bags, holiday giftware and calendars.
To date, retail sales under the Kids-Did-It! Designs brand have garnered licensees more than $5.5 million.
Nearly 500 of the most compelling illustrations from the collection are available for licensed reproduction. The digitized images, organized in seven categories, can be easily adapted to a variety of materials including paper, textiles, toys, clothing, housewares and soft goods, ceramics, melamine, plush toys and giftware. "Just let your imagination go!" says Glenn. "The enthusiastic reaction to our Art-by-Kids concept, to the images in the collection, plus our story-telling logo and our promotional photos speaks well for continued growth of the brand."
In May, Kids-Did-It! Properties will be exhibiting their illustration collection at booth 2500 at The SURTEX show in NYC, where they will be actively seeking licensing and design partners for Housewares, Home Furnishings, Furniture, Home Accessories, Giftware, Stationary and other product categories.
Authors, Michelle and Glenn Abrams, will also be there signing copies of their new book, Blue Cows & Happy Fruit: Discovering the Artist in Your Child.
