Artwork Created by Kids Published as Holiday Card Series

SAN DIEGO, CALeap Year Publishing, working in partnership with San Diego, CA based Kids-Did-It! Properties - the first Art-Licensor in the unique Artwork-by-Kids product category - have published a collection of charming and colorful greeting cards and gift bags under the Kids-Did-It! Designs® retail brand. In addition to learning the basics of art and design, each young artist also earns royalties for the reproduction of their artwork! The unique series of greeting cards and gift bags features floral, animal and holiday illustrations made by young art students, age 5 to 13, and are available for purchase throughout the US and Canada.

Leap Year Publishing, producers of creative consumer products for the toy and stationary markets, was inspired to select illustrations from the Kids-Did-It! Designs¨ collection because of their fresh and colorful images, and the unique appeal of their artwork-by-kids concept.

"It's a great idea! The bright color and fun of these drawings are really appealing, and it's a nice surprise when you find out they were made by young kids!" said Lisa Ryan, Sales and Marketing Manager for Leap Year Publishing.

The cards are available in Thanks You, Blank and Holiday collections and feature floral, animal and holiday artwork created by Jessie Abrams (11), Tim Albe (8), Anna Badger (9), Gina Barba (5), Carly Bowerman (5), Christopher Bowerman (7), Elsa Fleisher (7), Alicia Hanson (10), Roxanne Hanson (7), Conrad Mazur (6), Christina Miller (9), Trevor Nielsen (7), Bianca Saad (8), Jeffrey Shutt (6), Taylor Spera (10), Ryan Willson (13), and Lauren Van Woy (9) – all young students of California artist and art teacher, Michelle Abrams.

Throughout the summer young children, ages 5 to 14, joined Michelle in her San Diego studio to study basic principles of art and design. Her encouragement and contagious love for the arts helps to bring out the best from her enthusiastic students.

Michelle often compares her student's artwork to those of the classics, describing it as, "...quite colorful and strikingly beautiful – some worthy of being called 'fine art' in the tradition of Matisse, Picasso or Miro." After class, Michelle encourages parents and students to "take [their artwork] off the refrigerator, enlarge it, frame it – treat it as fine art and display it proudly throughout the house!"

Michelle's husband, Glenn, also a designer, was inspired to create Kids-Did-It! Properties™, an art-licensing and design studio that collects, represents and publishes the student artwork. Aside from the thrill and satisfaction of being published artists, the young kids also earn royalties for the reproduction of their work.  "We even make royalty payments using our own Kids-Did-It! illustrated checks," says Glenn. "Students often use the proceeds as extra allowance, or for college savings.  Some students have even framed their first royalty check!"

About the Kids-Did-It! Designs® greeting cards, Glenn says, "This is an ideal use for the illustrations - the images are colorful, cheerful and charming and have such strong appeal. They're so uplifting and make a great gift!"

In addition to Leap Year Publishing, Kids-Did-It! has provided images for an expanding list of enthusiastic licensees including postage stamp manufacturer Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation, Jeanmarie® Creations for Walgreens drugstores, office product giant MeadWestvaco, Deluxe subsidiary Checks Unlimited, Gibson/American Greetings, Papel Giftware®, Prentice Hall and Houghton-Mifflin Publishers and DayGlo® Color Corporation. Kids-Did-It! has also provided images for The Covenant House for homeless children, as well as Audubon, KPBS-TV and the San Diego Hospice, as part of their fund raising art exhibitions.

With its distinctive look and feel, licensed artwork by more than 70 Kids-Did-It! artists has been published on a variety of merchandise ranging from postage stamps, books, checks and address labels, note and greeting cards, to gift bags, holiday giftware and calendars.  Retail sales under the Kids-Did-It! Designs® brand have garnered licensees more than $5.3 million, to date. More than 470 of the most compelling illustrations from the collection are available for licensed reproduction and distribution under the Kids-Did-It! Designs® logo – a retail brand that now stands for colorful, unique and inspiring products that appeal to consumers who love kids and are delighted by the freshness, innocence, and fun of their artwork.

The images, organized in seven categories, can be easily adapted to a variety of materials including paper, textiles, toys, clothing, housewares and soft goods, ceramics, melamine, plush toys and giftware. "Just let your imagination go!" says Glenn.  "The enthusiastic reaction to our Artwork-by-Kids concept, to the images in the collection, plus our story-telling logo and our promotional photos speaks well for continued growth of the brand."

Next June, Kids-Did-It! Properties™ are, once again, planning to exhibit their illustration collection in NYC, where they will be actively seeking licensing partners for Housewares, Home Furnishings, Furniture, Home Accessories, Giftware, Stationary and other product categories.
